Who We Are
Read the Puritans is a non-profit ministry dedicated to connecting the Puritans with Christ’s church worldwide—for the edification of the saints and the glory of God.
Our Story
We founded this ministry under the conviction that some of the most biblically faithful, Christ-exalting, and powerfully relevant writings in church history came from the Puritans.
And yet, in a time when entire ministries are built around individual teachers and celebrity pastors, there are virtually none centered on these spiritual giants who had no other foundations than Christ and His Word. We exist to change that—to help unleash their voices back into the life of the church.
Three key experiences led us to start Read the Puritans:
First, was our forced enrollment in what the Puritans called “the school of Christian experience” —in other words, trials. In some of our hardest seasons, the Lord used Puritan writings as a kind of “balm of Gilead” for our souls. Their work wasn’t just theological—it was deeply pastoral, meeting us right in the valley. You can read one personal example in our review of William Bridge’s A Lifting Up for the Downcast.
Second, both our founders come from a military background, where reading is essential. In warfare, you study those who’ve gone before you—strategy, theorists, doctrine, past campaigns—because you know your own experience isn’t enough. We believe the same is true spiritually. Yet much of what’s popular today lacks the depth, clarity, and seriousness we’ve found in the Puritans. Reading Scripture alongside these men has been one of the most sharpening and sanctifying experiences of our lives.
Finally, one of our founders came to this conviction while pursuing his PhD. Time after time, as he explored potential research topics, he found the Puritans had already written extensively on them. The key terrain facing the church today had already been seized with remarkable depth and clarity. He came to the conclusion that he could impact the church in a much bigger way by pointing others to these rich and well-tended fields of biblical truth than by finishing his PhD. Why create a new wheel when we already have one that just needs to be dusted off and put back in operation?
